The Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae is an outstanding example of a Hellenic votive Sanctuary located in a rural setting. The artistic achievement displayed at this temple is reminiscent of the Hellenic era. Remarkable archaic features such as elongated surface with 15 columns and a façade with 6 columns represent daring innovations that were used by the Ionic and Corinthian Orders

The temple was dedicated to Apollo Epicurius (god-healer) by the inhabitants of Philagia. He was said to come to their rescue when they were afflicted by plague. The ruins of the church rise to 1130 meters in the mountainous landscape of the region of Arcadia in the heart of Peloponnese.

The temple was built in the 5th century and is an icon of post-Parthenonian edifices.

Of the Corinthian capital, the Temple of Bassae is the best conserved. It is considered a model for all of the Greek and Roman capitals.

Since the temple was located out of the city, it remained over long time undiscovered. A French architect accidentally stumbled on the temple in 1765 and brought it to the attention of the academic world. An archaeological investigation commenced and was very profitable, but it was said to be prejudicial and thus compromised to the integrity of the site.

A whopping 22 sculptured plates were discovered and by order of the England’s King George IV were transferred to British Museum along with the Corinthian capital in 1814. The temple would later be restored in 1902 and again in 1965 the monument was renovated again.
