Paris, France is swarming with fascinating tourist attractions and exciting things to see and do. But one of the most popular attractions is the Louvre Museum which has been displaying priceless works of art from around the world since it opened more than 200 years ago.

Opened in 1793, the Lourve is the world's largest and arguably the most well-known museum. Although it opened officially to the public as a museum in the late 1790s it was originally built in the late 12th century as a fortress of protection for Parisians against invading forces from the north.

Four hundred years later it was converted from a military compound to a palace for Parisian royalty and finally in 1793 it was turned into the museum that it is today.

With the exception of a few individual pieces, the Louvre is essentially an art museum. It covers an area of over 15 acres and its permanent collection includes works that are hundreds and in some cases thousands of years old.

The more than 35,000 works of art housed within the walls of the Louvre are divided into eight separate categories or departments. These departments are Sculptures, Decorative Arts, Drawings, Egyptian Antiquities, Near Eastern Antiquities, Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Islamic Art, and Paintings and Prints.

Perhaps the most famous work of art housed at the Louvre is the iconic "Mona Lisa" by Leonardo Da Vinci. There has been tremendous debate through the world art community about the identity of the woman in this renowned painting. Some have said that it is a woman named Lisa Gherardini who was the wife of a prominent Italian silk merchant.

Other art connoisseurs argue that the woman in the painting is Pacifica Brandano who was the mistress of a prominent Italian ruler in the 1400s.

If you plan on visiting Paris at some point, the Louvre should be one of the main things on your travel itinerary. It is easy to find and features daily guided tours. Visiting this museum will be a superb experience, but don't take my word for it. Go ahead and see for yourself
