But there are also some fantastic things to do in Chicago that won't cost you anything but the possible cab fare that it takes to get there.

Whether you call it the Windy City, Second City, the City of Broad Shoulders, or any of its other nicknames, Chicago is a legendary town with a diverse culture.

Stories abound in Chicago about iconic residents like gangster Al Capone and comedian and actor Bill Murray. But the many famous and infamous current and former residents are only part of the reason visitors love Chicago. There is as much to do and see in and around the city as there is anywhere in the world but if you are in Chicago and find yourself a bit light in the wallet, there are plenty of things to do that are completely free of charge.

The Art Institute of Chicago is a collection of the city's creativity in architecture, textiles, and photography and if you visit on any Thursday night of the year, you won't have to pay the admission charge.

The world-famous Navy Pier is a 3,000-foot long indoor/outdoor entertainment center perfect for couples and families. While there are some attractions within Navy Pier that charge admission, there is no charge to enter the Pier and attractions like the Museum of Stanied Glass Windows this is free as well.

The Lincoln Park Zoo has everything that animal lovers could ever hope for and is completely free of charge every day of the year.

Millennium Park is a 25-acre sanctuary that hosts a bevy of activities and programs throughout the year, many of which are free. Some of the free programs at the Park include the eclectic Music Without Borders and Home Cooked Jazz - two of the most popular public presentations in the city.

The attractions mentioned here are only a few of those that are free throughout Chicago. Others include the Jane Adams Hull House, Shedd Aquarium, and the Alder Planetarium. Keep in mind that the latter two do charge a fee but have a number of free admission days throughout the year.
