Kolkata or more popularly Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is strategically nestled on the banks of Hooghly River and it is the principal commercial, cultural, and educational Centre of East India. Amazingly, the Port of Kolkata is India's oldest operating port. Whether you are a business traveller or just a tourist, you will find a cool thing to do in the city. Below are some things that have been rated 'cool' by the city residents.

1. Visit the Mother Teresa House

Mother Teresa, an Albanian Roman Catholic missionary, did most of her work in the city of Calcutta. She is one of the most popular Christians in the city and her former home is almost a shrine. Whenever you are in Calcutta, you've got to pay your respects to the saintly nun at her house - The Mother Teresa House. Her tomb is within the compound and entry is free.

2. Tour the Kalighat Kali Temple

This is a temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess - Kali. It sees hundreds of Hindu devotees and pilgrims that line up every day to see the statue and say prayers within its vicinity. Entry is free although you will get scammers who ask you to donate towards the maintenance of the shrine.

3. Shop at the New Market

Popular saying on the streets of Calcutta is that if it is available in India, it is available in Bulk in Calcutta’s New Market. They say you can buy anything here - from needles to elephants.

4. Explore the contents of Marble Palace

This is one of the major attractions to international tourists in Kolkata. It is a museum that has on exhibition the best works of Titian and Rubin as well as Victorian bric-a-brac. The Palace was built in 1853 and contains priceless pieces of Indian art. The palace is open 10:00AM-16:00PM Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

5. Watch the horses and bet winners at Maidan racecourse

This is the city's biggest racecourse and it features five racing tracks, a helipad, a golf course, a lake on the premises and polo grounds. Just to demonstrate how good this rodeo is, sample this; the available sweepstakes include; Queen Elizabeth II Cup race, Indian Champion Cup and Calcutta Gold Cup. If I were you, I would not miss this premiere racing facility for anything.

Kolkata is an old city with a people who are used to visitors. It is one of the most tourist friendly cities in India. It is also a very cheap destination...I mean, where else in the world would a budget of US$1,000 take you to the finest hotels and premiere entertainment hotspots other than in Calcutta?
